Anyone at all interested in the Vaio L?

I was just wondering if the Sony all in one following had even a vague amount of interest in this laptop crowd. No one seems to be talking about it anywhere, but it looks like a pretty nice all in one compared to the few competitors.



Also, does anyone know if it uses a 3.5" or 2.5" HDD?



Sorry if this shouldn't be posted here, but I just couldn't find any other forum that had as big of a following as this one. Please remove if necessary. Desktop review has had 1 new thread in the past year for Sony!

It does look pretty nice...and I think it's safe to assume that it's a 3.5" drive since it says max storage 2TB..we barely have any 1TB 2.5" drives...unless it has 2 drive bays, but I doubt it.

I think the T400/T500 (and probably the X200 and W500) were the first to receive it. There was a version of the T400 and T500 labeled Windows 7 Enhanced Experience. I remember it was quite the fuss that existing owners would not get the benefits of it (even though nobody was certain how much better the Lenovo EE would be than just a custom install of the OS).



It did not last long, because next January (so about 3-4 months later) the new T510-T410-W510 was announced. Those were probably the first models that were also designed with Windows 7 in mind.

I did some reading through using google, found out there was 2 versions of T500, one with Vista, the other with Windows 7, felt weird to me as I thought a User installed Windows 7 when it was released back then.



Seems as you have said, T410/T510/W510 are the first "official hardware" to support Windows 7 fully.

The Tx00, Rx00, Wx00, and X200 series were the first to support Windows 7, although they were all initially released with Windows Vista. I got my T500 with Windows Vista, before upgrading to Windows 7 a year later.



At first, the Tx00 and Wx00 series had issues with switchable graphics in Windows 7 (the discrete GPU would be enabled after resuming from sleep), however, this was later resolved through driver updates from Lenovo. Overall, I'd say they run W7 just as well as the Tx10 and Wx10 generation, which was released with W7 installed.

Actually there are some issues with the latest switchable graphics drivers from Lenovo. There is a conflict between Windows 7 SP1 or Interner Explorer 9 and the Intel graphics driver. Actually the conflict is with an update that those applications install.



The Intel graphics driver from the switchable graphics package is old and buggy, and causes problems with some of the newer updates to Windows. Firefox 4, Skype, Live Messenger and Mail and other applications might also be affected. There should be another driver update from Lenovo shortly, hopefully.

What about the models with Nvidia GPU, particularly the T510 with Nvidia NVS 3100m switchable graphics?

@lenardg: Interesting. Have not heard about/experienced these issues, but that's probably because I haven't bothered upgrading to SP1 yet.

Those use entirely different switchable graphics drivers--it's Nvidia's Optimus dynamically switching graphics--so it will not be affected.

The T400, T500, W500 models were being sold with Vista in the months before Windows 7's release, with an option to receive a free upgrade to Windows 7 upon release.



The upgrade DVDs would be mailed to the customer once it was officially released.. and I believe this offer was valid till sometime in July 2009?

Hi,

I think many of tried to install Windows 7 on your VAIO CS but those Touch Sensor buttons, Fn buttons... Don't work. But in this guide, it will!



STEPS

1) Backup your DATA.

2) Download Drivers from Sony Website.

3) Clean Install Windows 7.

4) Graphics Driver.

5) Audio Driver

6) Ethernet Driver

7) Wireless LAN Driver

8) Bluetooth Driver [Run Setup from C:UpgradeWidcommsetup.exe (I dont remember path properly but C:Upgrade) ]



At this point, Brightness (from Control Panel), Audio, Ethernet, WLAN, Bluetooth should work

You need not install that stupid VAIO Nattery Checker. It just notifies you if you use non-genuine VAIO Batteries and eats your RAM

I haven't received any crashes or anything but I'm scared.

That was a common error on the G51J/Jx. On the J it was mostly fixed after BIOS 208, I'm not sure about the Jx. What BIOS are you on?

Yes if it continues, especially if there are a lot of those warnings, I would consider a fresh install or if that doesn't work, sending it in for RMA before your warranty expires. You shouldn't see these errors frequently - every once in a while maybe but not a bunch of them repeated.

Any idea what's causing it? The GPU?

Some googling said that it might be the intel chipset, but I'm up to date with those drivers.

I'm not exactly sure, I asked but it was never answered by asus what they changed in that BIOS to fix it. My guess was they changed something to do with the power management or voltage on the pcie lanes, since it seemed to be related to ACPI but only on windows. If doing an sfc /scannow or a reinstall doesn't clear up the errors, it could be down to some sort of hardware problem. I don't really have a good answer sorry.

Thanks. I did the scannow thing and I'll have to wait and see if that fixes it, if not I'll reinstall. But I haven't recieved a single BSOD/crash since I had this laptop. These errors may have started in January or earlier. Does that mean anything?

I found the first error. Oddly enough it started the day i did a reinstall of windows. Dec 26th. On top of that i have thousands. Literally thousands of disk errors from dec 26th and some more for a few days after. The disk errors stopped a while back and haven't recieved one since. HD tune pro shows my disk is OK. Could this be a windows thing?

You'd need to figure out if you changed any drivers or anything since the errors showed up. Again I don't really know the cause of these errors, especially since it's been a long time since I had my G51 and I never really ran windows on it very much.

Bright patches (not bright spots?) on VPCZ1 FHD screen

Hey, so i got my screen replaced in November for bright spots so i do not think i have them again.

I have three patches of overly bright LCD/LED patches on the screen. They can be visibly seen on angles but still can be noticed normally. Its not that distracting but just that they are there...

Does anyone have any fixes for this or any explanations for why it might occur?

I'm still under warranty but the last time i sent it in to get my screen fixed, it took three weeks.



Any input would be appreciated.

My VPCZ1 got the same bright patch too; I sent it to the sony service center and they replaced the whole lcd panel for me in 3 days for free



but I will need to pay extra to extend the warranty to 3 years because of this

They call this "bruising," and it looks like, I don't know, a skin disorder or something (or the reverse of what an actual skin bruise looks like - bright instead of dark blotches). Same problem on my FHD, but along with another repair, took over a month for Sony to fix, replacing the screen entirely. I think the best suggestion is to have a bullet-proof case for carrying, and always put a protective cloth between the keyboard and screen. Like so many laptops, since they were first made, this one has way too little of a gap between the keyboard and screen, and I'd bet that pressure from the keys or pressure on the backside of the screen leads to the bruising (although I don't know for sure).

Oh, so is this based on physical damage or the so-called "wear and tear". I generally use a silicone skin on the keyboard and then i put their cloth in between. I treat this laptop like a baby but the bulletproof case might be overkill for a student's needs xD.

This is my second screen problem with the sony z since i purchased it in November, i wonder what they'll say...

Samsung HLS DLP--horizontal black lines

I purchased a Samsung DLP HLS5086W in the fall of 2006. For a few months now it has had several evenly spaced horizontal black lines along the sides of the picture. I've read online that this is caused by a failing light tunnel. I've also read that Samsung is doing free repairs for failed light tunnels that are causing shadows. I don't have shadows, but wonder if my problem is also eligible for a free repair.
When you spend $1500 on a TV you sure expect it to last longer than 4 years. I hope Samsung will stand behind its equipment.

I'm sorry to hear that you're having an issue with the TV.

The best recommendation I can make is to contact the Samsung customer service center at 800-SAMSUNG. I don't handle service inquiries here on the forums, so they would be best able to assist with explaining what, if anything, is covered. Many times, these issues are handled on a case-by-case basis and are model number specific.
