Screen problems on HP-DV9823EA

I own a HP Pavilion laptop model DV9823EA approx 3 years old with an odd problem.

It has an intermittant fault whereby the lapboot boots up but the screen remains black. I have connected an external monitor to the laptop when this happens and everthing is fine - no error messages.

If I continue to switch the laptop off and on, eventually the screen will appear. When the screen appears I have no further problems until I shut down the laptop, then the whole process repeats.

If I dont shut down but simply close the laptop, the screen always appears when I re-open anytime later.

Sometimes, when the screen does not operate after 5 or 6 attemts, I have found that removing the battery and starting the machine from the mains adaptor only fixes the problem.

I have tried the usual solutions such as removing the battery, holding down the power button etc etc but to no avail.

As I said, the problem is random. Sometimes it will start up immediately, other times it can take 10 mins to get the screen to work.

It may sound strange but occcasionally I have resorted to blowing into the vents at the back and the machine has started at the next attempt - but not every time. I dont think the problem is overheating as this occurs from a cold or hot start.

This is driving me mad. Any ideas?

Doesn't the 460m and 5870 and probably the 285m except for DX11 outperform the 555m? Seems a step sideways or back in the gpu department and puts in direct comparison with the dell xps 17 3d which has a 120hz screen and can likely be had for the same or less than this will likely go for.

Reply 2 : MSI GX 680 Officially announced

Sounds indeed, like another rebaggage to me,

May be wrong though Alc.

Reply 3 : MSI GX 680 Officially announced

Yep, I would have thought a 6870 at least... its still a downgrade from the 5870 in the 660s but it fits the pattern of going back and forth between ATI and Nvidia cards. Now a 6970 would be a fantastic update. It seems like their just shuffling graphics cards through the unit with little if any benefit.

Reply 4 : MSI GX 680 Officially announced

Yeah, unless they intend to release to a certain area/place/country, i suppose they could dub releases of the 6 series msi's as many times as they like.

Reply 5 : MSI GX 680 Officially announced

So in around 6 months they are going to release a laptop with even WORSE graphics than the 460m?

Sony VPC-Z11 - Frequently Asked Questions

You have read all this never-ending threads about the new Z11 and you are not quite sure what all this stuff means to you? Read on!

1. Question: I have read an article about the i7 using way more power than the i5. Should I stick with the i5?

Answer: The rumors about i7 using significant more power have been proven wrong. Intel has confirmed that the i7 will have just a slightly increased power consumption (according to the higher clock speed), which will result in a slightly decreased battery life (in terms of minutes).

2. Question: Is the large capacity battery either heavier or bulkier than the standard?

Answer: Both. See this thread for detailed information and part numbers.

3. Question: Will the SSD wear out quickly and will I suffer from performance degradation and stuttering?

Answer: Usually it won't and you won't. Read this thread for further information.

4. Question: Do the SSDs support TRIM?

Answer: Yes they do, but the (drivers for the) RAID controller don't. This means that there is no TRIM support for the built-in SSD yet. As soon as there is TRIM support for the Intel RAID drivers (which is expected) there will be TRIM support for the built-in SSD.

5. Question: Oh my gosh - no TRIM - i'm doomed.

Answer: No you aren't. The SSD has an internal mechanism (garbage collection) to maintain performance which seems to work pretty good.

6a. Question: I do not even know what TRIM is.

Answer: Don't worry. In case you do, read this article.

6b. Question: Are there any tweaks for the SSD to improve / maintain performance and lifetime?

Answer: See this thread.

7. Question: Will I get dual, triple or quad RAID?

Answer: It depends on the overall capacity and the place you have ordered your notebook. See this thread.

8. Question: I need more storage. Can i replace the optical drive to add another SSD / HDD?

Answer: Yes, you can - with some limitations. See this and this thread.

9. Question: So this won't work for me. Can i at least upgrade the built-in SSD?

Answer: Yes, you can - but only with another Sony SSD. They use a proprietary form factor and connector and there aren't any known third-party drives that fit. You can get the drives (besides other replacement parts) via Sony Parts or your local Sony service provider. Be aware that you have to disassemble the notebook to replace the SSD.

10. Question: Can I upgrade the memory by myself?

Answer: Yes, you can - there are two memory slots available which can be accessed without disassembling the notebook. Be aware that your 4 GB memory might be either 1 x 4 GB or 2 x 2 GB; in the latter case you will have to replace both modules to get 8 GB. For tested modules see this thread.

11. Question: Where can i find the advanced options in the BIOS menu?

Answer: You have to reflash a modified BIOS to access the advanced options. See this thread for detailed information.

12. Question: Is there USB3 support? Will we see it somewhen?

Answer: There is currently no USB3 support out of the box. If you need USB3 connectivity you have to get an USB3 ExpressCard adapter. Nobody knows if and when there will be USB3 support - but you should not expect it within the next year.

13. Question: I have found some defect / dead pixels on my screen. Is there anything I can do?

Answer: Sony states that displays having less or equal than 7 (1600 x 900 displays) resp. 10 (1920 x 1080 displays) dead pixels cannot be seen as 'defect', i.e. they are not covered by warranty and they won't be replaced. You can try to fix the pixels by yourself, return your notebook within the deadline for returning goods or try to find an individual agreement with Sony (unlikely). However there are very few reports about dead pixels, so you do not have to expect having dead pixels when buying this notebook.

14. Question: Why does my TPM not work?

Answer: Models pre-Z13 sold in the US do not have a TPM (Z13 do), but there are models with TPMs available in other countries (Europe for example). The US models do have at least a socket for a TPM on-board, but there is no known working solution for user-added TPMs by now.

15. Question: Can I use multitouch gestures with the built-in touchpad?

Answer: Yes, you can by using Synaptics multitouch drivers (in case you did a fresh install) and/or two-finger-scroll.

16. Question: Can i run Linux on this notebook?

Answer: Yes, you can. Except brightness control using the hotkeys everything should work fine. See this thread for more details.

17. Question: Will the palmrest wear out quickly? I have even seen pictures on that.

Answer: Usually it won't - at least not more quickly than any other palmrests out there. The complaints you have heard are mostly due to exceptional use.

18. Question: I'm still unsure about this wear out stuff - what can I do?

Answer: Get some kind of protective cover. The most mentioned product here is a DIY set from BestSkinsEver, which has to be custom made to fit the notebook itself and the palmrests. You can find a step through guide on how to apply them here. You can find custom-tailored covers for example here.

19. Question: I'm looking for a case for my Z and I'm not sure if the chosen one fits. Can you recommend one?

Answer: See the sleeves, bags and cases thread.

20. Question: How do i remove those nasty stickers?

Answer: Just pull them off gently by using something that won't scratch (fingernails, dental floss) and use the sticker itself to remove the adhesive left behind. The definition of "won't scratch" of course contains "pressure" and "intensity". Never ever use some kind of abrasive or an eraser for example. It might also help to warm the stickers a little bit using a hairdryer. You'll find some guidance here or here.

21. Question: Is the fan really that annoying?

Answer: It depends on your definition of 'annoying'. Most people don't find it that nasty - others can't live with the slight noise you can hear. You won't find it out for yourself without trying it.

22. Question: Will there be a refresh within the next ... months?

Answer: There is was minor refresh in mid june (Z12), but no hardware changes, just different preconfigured models and additional CTO options. There was another refresh in end sep (Z13) with updated CPU options. Likely there might be a refresh within the next 3 to 6 months and no 'new' Z within the next 36 months, but keep in mind that these numbers might turn out to be completely wrong.

23. Question: Where can i find updated graphics card drivers supporting hybrid graphics?

Answer: With the release of the Z13 the drivers got updated to 190.24 / 2021. In addiontion, there are community-build 260.63 / 2022 drivers, which can be considere fully working for most users. You can find further information in this thread.

24. Question: Where can i find updated graphics card drivers to have Optimus support? Will there ever be working drivers?

Answer: There aren't any fully working drivers yet. But you can support the efforts in creating one by joining this thread. The Z11 complies with all the hardware requirements for Optimus, so - yes, we might see Optimus support somewhen.

25. Question Are there any differences in the chassis material used for the various color options (especially premium carbon fiber)?

Answer: No. The premium carbon fiber is still plastic. The only difference you're paying for is the finish.

26. Question Is there an recommended installation order when doing a clean install?

Answer: Yes, follow this thread.

27. Question Are there any disassembly guides?

Answer: Yes, follow this thread.

There are no facts on that, just rumors. Summing them up: there might be a refresh within the next 3 to 6 months, and a complete new revision in about 36 months (heavily depending on technology leaps).

In my humble opinion you won't see any refresh worth mentioning as long as there is still no competition and the notebook sells that good.

But maybe we can get more profound facts on that.

On the sticker removal item, fingernails CAN and DO cause scratches in the plastic.

Best course of action is to pick at the sticker itself and keep from "digging" into the plastic to get the stickers off. You can remove any left over goop with the sticker itself.

UE55c6000 LED TV

I have had this model tv for 6 months now and whilst overall I am very satisfied I have an ongoing issue with the way the tv handles "blacks". They appear very grainy, especially at night time when ambient light levels are low, and always seem to have lighter almost brown shadowing in those areas. Sometimes there is no defifnition at all in very "black" areas. Anyone recommend which settings I should look at?

Reply 1 : UE55c6000 LED TV

Have you cycled the presets with PMODE button ?
Also under tvs menu you can adjust under picture/advanced/black tone.
I'm not a settings guru but that may help. Personally I also find the tv signal has bad colors at times but when a bluray or game is played I notice a big difference in dark area blotchiness IMO , whereas the games and bluray simply have a better picture quality feed to tv

Who actually makes Dell laptops?

Is it Quanta? Or Compal? Or some other company I've never heard of?

Reply 1 : Who actually makes Dell laptops?

It's branded Dell. Close enough.

Reply 2 : Who actually makes Dell laptops?

lol, I think they manufacture most parts yes.

they got big by using a different way of assembling the parts.

you should google the founder of Dell, the man is a Bill Gates kinda player.

very interesting lifestory

Reply 3 : Who actually makes Dell laptops?

The manufacturer for Dell parts is everybody. They get parts from Quanta, LG, Foxconn, Intel, etc... and they assemble it all.

For their laptops, if you are referring to their original design manufacturers, then you're right. As of late it has been Compal and Quanta. They've also used Mitac in the past but Mitac's been sinking for past several years.

I'd have to do some heavy digging, but I forgot which one(either Compal or Quanta), I want to say it was Compal made their last generation latitude D series.

As of now, I believe they do actually make their own latitude chassis's, in-house plants: Poland(formally Ireland), Malaysia(?). What others have posted is of course right too, but it applies to components of course.

depends on the model and contracts always change. A few years ago, some models were based on Samsung notebooks. As of 2009, Compal is still being used for the manufacturing of HP and Dell notebooks among others.

How to remove MSI GX640 fan?

Hi,

I've bought some thermal paste (Artic MX-4) and I don't know how to put it on my laptop... I can't remove the fan!!!

At first I removed the pannel, I removed the fan's screws but it seems like the fan is attached to the whole structure. So I removed ALL the screws and tried to remove the structure... but it was very hard and I saw some glue peeling off so I backed off..

My laptop seems now a bit shaky (next to the audio wholes) and I fear I've done something irregular. It's not so bad so I suppose it's ok... Now, how on earth do I remove the fan?!?!

And is it the right place to apply thermal paste?

Omg... HELP.

P.S. : I wanted to put thermal paste so that I could overclock enough to play Starcraft II with my new 26 inches screen on ultra settings. I run mine at 700/100 when on Zalman cooler.

P.S. II : sorry for double posting but this one is more detailled and people on GX640 owners thread don't answer!

Samsung SyncMaster 2333HD Annoyance Issue.

Hi all,
I have a SyncMaster 2333HD that I am using as my desktop's monitor. Since my desktop has an HDMI out, I am using the HDMI input on the monitor instead of the PC input. My computer is a Gateway FX, running Win 7 64 bit. My problem is that when the PC is left alone for a period of time with no screen activity, or even goes to screen saver; after about 5 minutes or so, the screen switches to a black screen with the no signal box on it. Is there any way to turn this off?

Asus U30Jc + flash bios 215 = DEAD

Hi!!

Yesterday, i flashed the 210 bios to the 215. Used the integrated bios utility, for safety () . Power cord + battery (charged at ~100%) pluged.

Flashed ok. Shuted down. Never started up.

The frontal leds for power connection don't show anything. Tried with the battery pluged and unpluged, with no change.

If someone have any idea, please post it!

And the rest, be carefull with this last bios version...

A little off-topic, but why did you flash your bios?

I know some desktops mobos have a turn on button on the actual motherboard, maybe you can try that? I doubt a laptop would have that, but am just trying to help. Also how old is your pc? I heard asus made it even easier to flash your motherboard using.... meh i dont even know... i just heard it somewhere.

An old and sickly habit, to always be updated...

It hasn't any power button or jumper. And it's pretty new. Around June 2010. Can't send it to rma, because asus don't have any support in argentina, for this product.

Thanks anyway!! Any other good ideas, are always welcome!!

Reply 4 : Asus U30Jc + flash bios 215 = DEAD

Well.... just to report that almos 4 weeks later, and still the autorized service from asus, just say to me "call the next week". So, don't know if they have any possible solution, or it's just dead notebook...

As soon i get any news, will update it here...

Reply 5 : Asus U30Jc + flash bios 215 = DEAD

Tux Tupo, my friend!

Did you flash it using the BIOS 215 file stored on your HDD? If so, that seems to cause a bricked BIOS (using AFlash utility in the internal BIOS+ storing the BIOS update file on the NTFS HDD.

To avoid this, the ASUS site says that file must be on an external flash drive or card.

It's not the 215 BIOS update. I have the U30Jc and I've flashed it to BIOS 215 with no problems. (I think we spoke of this in another thread.)

But I used WinFlash, disabled all apps+programs incl my AV. The flash went smoothly as it has every time for me.

NOTE: Oh, I see where you posted on this in the U30Jc thread. Sorry, I forgot. You already know all of this, but I'll leave this post for others who may read it later. The 215 BIOS is fine on the U30Jc. It is how the flash is done that is the problem.

Sorry to hear that ASUS Support isn't getting to repairing your laptop. Technically, they don't have to since you flashed the BIOS at your own risk and didn't follow their instructions to only store the BIOS update file on an external drive (user-caused damage). But they have helped out several who have bricked their laptops with a bad BIOS flash in the past. So hopefully they will help you.

I know you live in Europe (Spain?), so you don't have the 1-year Accidental Damage Warranty like we do in the US?

Reply 6 : Asus U30Jc + flash bios 215 = DEAD

Hey Quatro!

No, i live in Argentina, so no accidental warranty. Actually, no warranty at all. Our service works only for notebooks imported by them. I imported it by myself, so no warranty

A little question... where it is sayd about the use of external flash drive or card? cannot find it

Thanks!!

Reply 7 : Asus U30Jc + flash bios 215 = DEAD

maybe this is stupid but any way you can get it to boot to a flash drive. have the flashdrive run a script to install the bios without any user interaction. i thought someone in this forum did that and it worked. i cant remember where i aw it though. it was called something like auto flashing asus or something.

Reply 8 : Asus U30Jc + flash bios 215 = DEAD

No boot at all. Battery and/or wall-plug connected, no power led signal at all. As good as dead...

Reply 9 : Asus U30Jc + flash bios 215 = DEAD

you could try opening a support ticket on the asus support forum, they're not the quickiest but they might know a trick or two to get it up and running w/o sending it in.

Very interesting. I was at the site this morning. I missed the 14" model. This definitely has my attention. I like the express slot and the upgrade bay option.

See why you should lust after a DC2 equipped HP laptop

Some of you may have seen my series of photos taken of my 8740w w/the DC2 display. I used a sample shot that comes with the HP Display Assistant, and they weren't very great shots. I knew I needed to do a better job.

Thanx to Aikimox I have some more nice backgrounds. I decided to use one of them to post some better more carefully taken shots exemplifying why I lusted after it before it was available, went thru the misery of the delays, and you probably will lust after it too if you're not one of the few that have one...

Normally, we digital photographers post process our RAWs to try to best reproduce the original, if we're not trying to enhance it in an artful fashion. So how do you think it performs at extreme angles? ...try it w/your laptop screen.

The Original JPG:

The above JPG displayed in Windows Photo Viewer, and photographs taken of the screen face on, and 45-ish degree angles:

(all photos share the same Lightroom treatment aside from slight variation in exposure compensation. The display was operating in 8-bit mode, AdobeRGB Gamut)

....any non-DC2 owner's dare try the same? ... hehehe, ok, that's not fair.

I'm absolutely thrilled with my choice to spend over 100% more than I originally budgeted when I 1st started looking for a great laptop to do PP work on. With thanx going to the great folks here from where I either learned everything I needed to to make the right decision, or just learned what I did not know and sought it out.

Reply 1 : See why you should lust after a DC2 equipped HP laptop

That's gotta be some of the best angles i've ever seen on a LCD. Only plasma comes close to that. But i have to see with my own eyes to believe. Now let's just hope they sealed it properly, it would be a pity to get dust specks inside such a nice screen. My dv9000 has acquired several large-ish dots of dust... But i don't have a clean room environment to take apart the LCD, i'd just end up with more dust inside if i do that.

Thanks, M8!

I envy your camera

Will you be willing to make a few shots for the review that I'm working on?

Indeed. Just PM me some ideas. Too bad I can't do the comparo to your M17x tho.

wow that is an amazing screen

the entire laptop makes my dv7 look like garbage

Reply 5 : See why you should lust after a DC2 equipped HP laptop

I'll just go ahead and say that screen is absurdly colorful. I want one @_@

Reply 6 : See why you should lust after a DC2 equipped HP laptop

I want one of the 15" ones in a desktop form! In terms of DPI and colors, all desktop LCDs are crap by comparison.

HP could make bucketloads of money if they sold that in desktop form.

Extreme angles you say? Meet the HP WVA (Wide Viewing Angle) display from 2006.

Sorry about the image quality, taken with my mobile phone and these office lights are really hard to avoid. So I put the laptop under the table and that kills the image quality in camera.

I'm duly impressed! Especially from the view from the bottom. Wow, can't be a straight-up TN display. The mid-2000's were definitely a high period as far as screens in laptops is concerned IMO; non of this wide-screen low vertical rez crap of today and a high rez option was often available in most everything.

I'm really happy you posted that. I wasn't aware there was another screen was that capable in that sense (old IBM and other older now-outdated-and-underpowered IPS based laptops notwithstanding). My path to getting the 8740w had taken me thru a period where I was scanning eBay for 8710w and 8730w machines. Then discovered the IPS based 8740w was coming. Had I known that type of screen was available in a particular model [tbd] that would definitely have made my radar screen. (do you know, is that a 8-bit hardware screen or 6-bit? Just for my edification.)

Actually, in that light I'm lucky I didn't know. I would have missed out on all else the 8740w and DC2 gives me.

Vaio Charger Making Noise....

Hi all,

My Vaio's charger has been making some noise lately. It's hard to describe, but it's kind of a scratchy, electrical sound. It only makes this noise when it's plugged in, and it gets a bit louder if it's been plugged in for a while (seemingly relative to how hot the charger is). The charger does get warm while in use, but not SO hot that you can't touch it, so i don't think it's overheating?

Thing is, it's charging just fine, and the light is green. It's working perfectly but this irritating noise makes me think that a problem is arising... I use this laptop everyday, but I've had it for barely half a year... Do I have to replace the charger already? is it bad to keep it plugged in at all times?

(Model: VPCF13AFX)

Any input is welcome, thanks!

It's a non issue. I posted the same question a while back:

Out of curiosity, what part number is on your power brick? It should be VGN-AC19V## ## meaning two digits that pertain to your particular charger.

Difference between $1250 and $1100 XPS 17 3D?

I've decided to splurge for the 3D model because I've heard some bad reviews of the 900p screen and so I want that 1080p screen; apparently it's the same as the Alienware M17x, which has gotten some really good reviews.

So I'm wondering if anyone more knowledgeable than me can answer this - if I configure the two 3D XPS 17's identically with all options I want, $1250 model comes in about $30 cheaper than the $1100 model, but it ships almost a month later!!

So can anyone tell me the difference between the two 3D laptops?

The only thing I can find is that the $1100 3D model ships with 4GB default instead of 6GB and doesn't include a pair of glasses - is that the extent of the difference?

Because it looks like the 4GB XPS will ship 4/8, while 6GB or more means shipping on 4/28, and given the choice, I'd rather get the laptop sooner since I intend to add the about 10-12 GB of RAM myself anyway

Reply 1 : Difference between $1250 and $1100 XPS 17 3D?

The price

They both had a 4/1 ship date when I ordered mine. I went with the $1250 one since it ended up being much cheaper in the end.

I thought I remember reading that the 3D glasses were causing some delays. I could be wrong though. In the $1100 model, does it give you an option for 3d glasses and does it say "may delay your ship date"?

not really - it's any RAM above 4GB that seems to be causing delays, and the customization pages support this - the only difference between the two models was RAM and the glasses, and it was only the RAM that had the "May cause delay" notice.

Oddly enough, Dell's removed the option to put 16GB in; even though I never intended to pay for something so overpriced, but it's interesting they removed the option.

rotational noise from rear wheels

hello folks!

I have a 2000 corolla that makes rear wheel noises, it sounds like a brake pad hitting the rotor during rotation, it increases with speed but I can only hear when city driving, mostly when coasting at low speeds, also as soon as I hit the brakes it goes away.

I took the Car to the mechanic and he cleaned and adjusted rear brake shoes and said the suspensions are weak. After a day the noise came back I called him and he said it's due to the suspensions and nothing can be done unless i change suspensions.

To me it doesn't sound at all like a suspension problem since it's related to the rotation of the wheels.

Before I call him back I would like to get some opinions because I was charged without the problem being fixed.

What do you guys think, I can't find any specific info on the web, i found a couple of threads that did not come to any conclusion.

Reply 1 : rotational noise from rear wheels

My first suspicion would be mis-worn drums maybe? If the pads had ever worn down too far, they could have damaged the drums (cut groves in them) and caused the surface to become malformed. That would cause what you are talking about with the intermittent touching of the pads.

Also, your brake adjuster could be too tight as well. I'm not 100% familiar with the Corolla rear brakes and how they work precisely, but if the adjuster is too tight, it can cause rubbing.

I definitely would not suspect suspension causing brake rubbing - that really makes no sense to me. I will tell you though that my 2002 corolla makes rear brake noise whenever I apply the brakes. I can hear the squeezing of the pads, but it has never impacted performance nor do they rub during regular driving.

VAIO F13 or wait for CB

Hi, I'm not too sure where to post this. I've checked the F series thread but it's a bit vast so I decided to post here. I've found a VPCF13S1E/B for around 880, sounds like a bit of a bargain to me? Although it seems there have been issues with fan noise.

Also, how would an i7 compare to a 2nd gen i5?

I'm wondering whether to wait for the CB, does anyone know when they are due in the UK and an approximate price point? and how they would match up with this F series.

Sorry if this has all been covered before.

Thanks

The one is 13.3" the other is 16.4"

The one is business series - the other multimedia

Totally different configurations....

You are the only one to know what you need/want....

The CB is 15.5" (it's the bigger brother of the luminous 14" CA, assume you read that as SB by mistake?)

The F13 is 16.4" whilst the F21 (new model) is 16"

I think the F is positioned as more of a media laptop, and the C(A/B) as more of a kids/students/general consumer laptop, but in a lot of ways it's a fair comparison for a home user.

Reply 3 : VAIO F13 or wait for CB

Can you post the full specifications of the F series you are looking at? Also mention what would be your primary use/requirement.

Reply 4 : VAIO F13 or wait for CB

Thanks for the replies.

Here's the spec:

Full HD (1920 x 1200)

Core i7 (GHz): 1.73 with Turbo Boost up to 2.93

Memory 4gb DDR3

500GB, 7200 rpm

DVD SuperMulti Drive

NVIDIA GeForce GT 425M 1GB

I think that covers the main bits. I'd be using this for my work which is web design and development running adobe cs5. I'd also be doing some casual gaming. So it's a desktop replacement really for home although I would occasionally take it out and about.

I'm not too worried about serious performance as I have an i7 desktop on the way as my main work machine. I'm not really set on i7 for a notebook it's just the price caught my eye, it may be overkill!

Decent solid laptop, good screen 15"-16", dedicated graphics and reasonable performance is what I'm after. Battery life isn't really an issue.

UN55C8000 Wireless Connection Issue

Just bought this TV last week and decided to try the Netflix. Long story short I ended up buying a faster router which is a Netgear N300. I keep getting blocked off the test page and was told by Samsung to manually eneter the IP Address as well as subnet mask etc. Anyways, my IP uses a dynamic IP address which would make setting it up manually useless. Called netgeat and was on the phone with them for over an hour and ended up try all the different configurations and still couldn't get past the gateway ping or IP issues. I'm new to all this stuff and my knowledge is limited at best. Can someone please offer me some advice as Samsung is not helpful and just tells me it's a router issue and Netgear tells me it's an ISP issue and the circle looks and feels like a bunch of dogs smelling each other butts walking in a circle. I would greatly appreciate any advice and help!!

Reply 1 : UN55C8000 Wireless Connection Issue

kjt1010,

If you're using a wired connection, unplug the Ethernet cable from the back of the TV. Change the option in the TV from "wired" to "wireless" back to "wired". Then, after powering off the router, power it back on and give it a minute to boot and connect to the modem. Then plug it directly into the TV and see if it will self connect. In some cases, this is enough for the TV to detect the settings and connect with the router.

Unfortunately, it's not a point of being part of the circle. But we can't assist with home networks.

I personally wouldn't enter manually. I'd go with Auto. But that's just my personal experience. You might also check the C|Net Networking Forum for more tips.

Reply 2 : UN55C8000 Wireless Connection Issue

I also have that problem. Just bought the tv and tried Netflix. Mine internet is hard wired to the tv because the wireless adapter ($80) didn't work well. Another thing, the automatic internet detector doesn't work. You have to manually punch in your ip address, subnet masks etc into the tv. I thought that was weird. If it's hard wired it should automatic detect.

Anyway, since I just bought, I complained online to Samsung, they sent over a tech to replace the board. It was fixed for like an hour, Netflix was working, then it just stopped. I thought it was the internet wire, but I hooked up the wire to my PS3. When I hooked it up to PS3 it Netflix worked and on the Playstation 3 it automatic detected my internet, so I didn't have to enter in anything. So it's definitely not my internet or wire.

It's something with SAMSUNG!!! I don't think they should release things (internet tv) just to gain market share. At least check everything before releasing the product. I know you guys (Samsung) need to make money, but that's how you lose customers. I'm considering going back to Sony!!! That's the truth. I like your thin tv and all, but at least make it work and not frustrate customers. I knew I shouldn't have gotten a Samsung when I saw the Samsung repair man on the freeway. I never see a Sony repair van driving around.

Anyway they sent another tech, but this tech was not bright (3rd party tech). He just blamed it on the internet service provider. In my head, I was saying to myself, dude my internet works all day long and it worked when I plugged it into the PS3, so don't give me the run around.

I think the repair man only know how to replace circuit boards, so I didn't really try to argue. I figure I go online and see if I can find answers, but all I found was a lot of people with this problem.

It doesn't happen to the tv, but to Samsung blu-ray players as well. So defintely Samsung need to man up!!!

Someone else has the same problem and that person listed other people with problems...

Samsung, you need to let upper management know before you get sued for a civil suit!!! After this, I will start posting on youtube so people know. Lets not make this into another white spot catastrophe you guys had a few years back on your other tv.
Problem: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XM2pei-8Fj8

SAMSUNG, YOU DON'T HAVE A FIX. YOU BETTER PAY SOMEONE TO FIX THIS. IT'S SOME KIND OF SOFTWARE ISSUE!!! Bad news travel fast on the internet these days. More people will post about this and you guys will be on the local news. It happened once, it'll happen again!!!

Reply 3 : UN55C8000 Wireless Connection Issue

Sorry for typos as I've been trying to fix the Samsung internet problem for the last week. Just really frustrated. Samsung, you guys can send me another tv (replacement), but it wouldn't do any good because I don't want a refurbished tv. Also, this problem is giving you a bad name, personally for me it has.

I'm going to tell my friends and family about the problems as well. Next time just release things that work. Don't be like the iPhone, that's not good at all!

I used the iPhone and went to Verizon (Google phone). Now, I'm going back to Sony!

And many other discussions have folk fixing their network to work with new devices.

But as you note, Samsung and other companies do not fix your home network. I'm beginning to think that such a service may be required soon.
Bob

Reply 5 : UN55C8000 Wireless Connection Issue

Thanks Bob, but I read your link, it doesn't work. Why? My internet is hard wired. It's not wireless. Also, why would you need to change setting on the router/modem etc. If your computer works a certain way with the router/modem, ipad works, PS3 works, why change the settings to your router just to fix the tv internet.

It should be really simple! You plug in your internet from the modem to the tv. BAM. It should work. Right? At least auto-detect my internet and not make me punch in ip address, mac address etc.

I think Samsung just released these products too soon to get market share and they haven't worked out all the details to make it work perfectly.

If more and more people have these type of problems, they need to recall the items. I understand it's business and everyone needs to make money, but please your customers and make it easy to set up. For the Playstation 3, I plug in the internet to the back of the PS3 and internet/netflix works. Why can't it be the same for Samsung? It's very easy! Don't make me punch in ip/mac/subnet mask etc.

So, personally, I think it's a Samsung issue. They need to make it easier to setup or do a recall.

Reply 6 : UN55C8000 Wireless Connection Issue

But the fact remains I've fixed this on wired, wifi and such networks. I agree this will not make any sense to most that since everything else works, why would we need to update firmware or make changes?

For those folk I fear they need to do what works for them. For me after all the times I've fixed it I can only write the entire industry needs to get it to "just work."

When you're ready to discuss networking I hope you can find the Cnet Networking Forum.
Bob

Reply 7 : UN55C8000 Wireless Connection Issue

Samsung doesn't have a clue why the internet on the Samsung tv doesn't work. Comcast doesn't have a clue either. The one to blame really is Samsung because if you plug the internet to the tv it should work. When you plug the internet to the PS3 or computer it works. So it shouldn't have anything to do with Comcast.

Anyway for readers, one thing you might want to check if you have internet problems with the Samsung tv is the "internet connector/converter". It's that little piece you have to connect the ethernet cable to, then from that piece you connect to the tv for internet.

Modem ---> Internet cable ---> PS3 ---> Netflix/Internet works on PS3

Modem ---> Internet cable ---> "Samsung Internet Connector/Converter" --> Samsung Tv ---> Doesn't work/work.

So the only thing that is different is this Samsung Internet Connector/Converter. Samsung make you plug the ethernet cable into this Samsung Internet Connector/Converter before you can plug it into the tv. To me, I think that's the reason why I have been having problems. I think I have a bad converter.

When I connect directly to the PS3 or computer (wired), there is no problem, but to use the internet to the Samsung Tv, Samsung makes me use this converter. I think the converter is bad. When move (to the left of to the right) it gives me internet signal. I think my converter is bad and not the circuit board.

I don't really need to configure anything on the modem/router. It's when I touch that converter it works and sometimes it doesn't work. So I think I need a new Samsung Internet Connector/Converter. My friend also purchased a Samsung, so I'm going to borrow his Samsung internet connector/converter and see if it fixes the problem. If I use his converter and it works flawlessly, then it's the damn Samsung Internet Connector/Converter.

I don't know why Samsung makes these converters? They make things so complicated.

Reply 8 : UN55C8000 Wireless Connection Issue

I've never heard of a "Samsung Internet Connector/Converter" so I'm now lost.

I've used there wifi dongles and more but not what you wrote here. I even googled for that and came up empty.

That means that others may be stumped too.

Can I have a Samsung part number for this thing?
Bob

Reply 9 : UN55C8000 Wireless Connection Issue

Here is the Samsung UN55C8000 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WvqCNze13Pk&feature=related). This is not my video. I just found it online.

The internet connecter/converter is in this video. It is marked at time (2:45) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WvqCNze13Pk&feature=related). Basically, to get internet to the Samsung, you have to connect the ethernet cable (internet cable) to the Samsung Connecter/Converter. Then that connect to the tv. With the PS3 I just connect the internet cable to the Playstation 3. I don't need that internet connecter/converter. I don't know what it is called, so I just called it some sort of internet connecter/converter. I believe I have a bad connecter that's why the internet doesn't work on the Samsung tv. The reason why I have that assumption is if I move it slightly to the left or right, I will get internet/netflix. Moving to the right or left just means I touch the Samsung connecter/converter to the right or left, not unplugging it from the tv.

It's like when you have an old headphone set and sound is not coming through to your ipod, you touch the wires to get sound to come through, either because the wire ripped or something. I think maybe the inside of that connecter is bad even though it is new.

So the only way for me to find out is go to my friend's house and borrow his connecter. If it works, then I just have a bad internet connecter/converter .

With this Samsung tv you have to use the connecter or converter for almost everything - cable, internet, sounds etc.

Reply 10 : UN55C8000 Wireless Connection Issue

The internet connecter is to the far right of the video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WvqCNze13Pk&feature=related) (Time: 2:45). I just want to note, Samsung, if I fix this problem I will be extremely happy, but I just got the tv and you put me through all this, it makes me consider going back to a Sony tv even though it doesn't look as good as a Samsung thin tv. But, this entire process has been extremely inconvienent and frustrating.

Next time, tell your 3rd party techs, not to blame it on Comcast or Network. It's a pretty simple idea. You plug the internet cable to the tv, internet should work. You plug internet cable to PS3/computer it works. It shouldn't be like this.

To Samsung, for your future tvs, please get rid of these connecters/converters. Customers are able to plug the internet cable directly to the Sony PS3 and computers. Invest into research and development please!

LCD laptop brightness - CCFL vs. LED Question

I have a dv9500t laptop with Ultra BrightView display (has 2 CCFL). It really POPS in the sunlight when I crank up the brightness (and it gives me a massive headache indoors if I forget to crank it back down).

Sadly, that is PAST tense... the machine died under extended warranty and HP is replacing it with a newer model.

However, the newer model they suggested only has a BrightView display (not Ultra BrightView). The case manager is telling me that LEDs are "brighter" and so this should be just fine; he also emphasized the more vibrant colors from the LED display as if that has something to do with brightness(?).

The dv9500t BrightView had a brightness of 200 nits or 200cd/m2; I assume that with 2 CCFLs in the Ultra BrightView, that means the Ultra BrightView would be about 400cd/m2 (is that the way this works?)

The dv7 BrightView display has a brightness of 200cd/m2.

My question: is my ability to see in sunlight (i.e. high ambient light environments) solely / primarily a function of the brightness of the display? Will the dv7 LED BrightView at 200cd/m2 be able to come close to the dv9500t Dual CCFL Ultra BrightView display where just ONE of the CCFL puts out 200cd/m2?

VGN-NW Freezes When Moved

Hi.

I've been encountering a huge problem for the past two months or so.

I bought my computer, a VGN-NW350F, back in July, and it ran perfectly until January. Out of nowhere, the laptop would freeze quite often.

If I happened to move the laptop, from a desk to my lap (very gently, mind you), it would freeze. The mouse wouldn't respond, none of the keys would work, nothing. When this happens, I have to force a shutdown with the power button. If I have it running on my lap, if I shift my weight for a moment, it sometimes freezes.

As if that wasn't bad enough, often when I try and boot up, it gets to the Windows logo, shows the Windows flag waving, and then everything freezes, requiring a reboot then.

I took the laptop to Sony, and they ran a test and told me that it could be malware somehow disrupting the C drive. They recommended that I do a complete C drive restore, which I did. For a few days, that seemed to do the trick. The laptop never froze, and everything ran smoothly.

But in the past few days, it's gotten just as bad as before. Just this morning, I had to reboot the computer five times before it was able to load past the Windows logo.

I want to take it back to Sony and have them take another look at it. They concluded before that the hard drive was working fine, but I can't wrap my mind around why it freezes when it's physically moved, and yet something's not physically broken inside.

If anyone has any advice or input before I bring it back to Sony again, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

Oh and if I need to give any more specs, just let me know!

Even if nothing is broken, something could be loose inside like the RAM. You could try check it yourself if you are confident that it will not void your warranty (or ask them to check it).

Your computer would seem to still be under warranty as you purchased it less than a year ago. I hope that Sony will be able to diagnose and fix the issue.

Reply 2 : VGN-NW Freezes When Moved

I have had something similar occur with my Vaio Z, as far is it freezing when moved. I have not had an issue with it starting up, but usually it will freeze several times in a row then work perfectly fine. I think the main reason this doesn't happen to me more often is I usually use it on a table, but I have intentionally tried to get it to freeze by using it for more than an hour on my lap and gently shaking it around every so often, and it wont freeze. Other times I will pick it up to move it to a new location and it WILL freeze.

I also can't really think of a good reason why this happens to me, so I am very curious to hear if you find the cause or if you send it back what they determined the problem was.

Based on your description (problem only occurring on movement), it certainly seems to be a physical problem (loose/faulty connector or dodgy solder joint?)

I would recommend trying to find a particular motion or movement that always reproduces the issue, that can be demonstrated to the Sony staff when you take it in.

Additionally, does the Windows Event Viewer give any further details on what is causing the crash/error? This may help direct you to a certain subsystem, RAM, hard drive or similar, to look for the bad connection.

I can't believe it didn't occur to me that something may have been loose inside (but I'm more surprised Sony didn't think of that either, haha)

ssssssssss, Could you please tell me exactly what to do with the Event Viewer? I've never used it before. I know there are probably tutorials, but you seem to know exactly what it should be looking for.

Reply 5 : VGN-NW Freezes When Moved

What information appears in event logs (Event Viewer)?

You mainly want to look at System 'error' events I think (relate them to times/dates of the crashes if you can) - they will probably say 'The system recovered from a serious error' or some such vague wording, but may contain more details about what exactly the error was, like if it's along the lines of 'woah dude, your computer crashed because some idiot took the RAM out while it was running' then obviously you'd be looking for a physical problem relating to the RAM or the connectors it fits into.

I'm on an XP machine atm, which I suspect you're not, so can't give you any exact advice on what wording will appear or to look for in case it differs & I confuse you, but if you can't understand any of it then copypasta me some relevant looking system error stuff in this thread & I will see if it tells me anything.

If you force shutdown your computer when not frozen you will also be able to rule out several things in the event viewer that are related to that and not anything causing it to freeze. In my case I get errors for things like my wireless, touchpad, fingerprint scanner, etc... but nothing that isn't related to the force shutdown itself.

Reply 7 : VGN-NW Freezes When Moved

I found the events on the log relating to the few times it's frozen today.

First is this one.

"The previous system shutdown at 1:42:24 PM on ‎3/‎17/‎2011 was unexpected."

In the table below that,

Log Name: System

Source: EventLog

Event ID: 6008

Level: Error

User: N/A

Logged 3/17/2011 1:43:25 PM

Task Category: None

Keywords: Classic

Computer: My Name

Then above that one

"The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."

Log Name: System

Source: Kernel-Power

Event ID: 41

Level: Critical

User: SYSTEM

OpCode: Info

Logged 3/17/2011 1:43:17 PM

Task Category: (63)

Keywords: (2)

Computer: My Name

So what part of any of that should I specifically be looking for?

I greatly appreciate the help everyone's been giving so far!

GT680R Buying Advice

Hello Everyone,

I have been waiting on the GT680R to come back out again. It is finally available again, at a very few places.

Anyway, I would like to make a couple of minor changes, and I have found two places that interest me. One is Xoticpc and the other is GenTechPC. The prices are about equal, but GenTech has them in stock, and Xoticpc does not. I have no experience with either place, and wanted to get opinions from anyone who has dealt with either place.

Thanks a lot!

They are both very reputable reseller. They are also forum members here as well. My personal favorite would be Ken from GentechPC. He is friendly and helpful. Show us some update when you receive your new toy !

You might take into account where your located... both are fine resellers from what Ive seen so it might come down to who is closest to you so your shipping time is less.

Reply 2 : MSI GX640 cannot start up without battery? (plug in ac adapter)

probably somethings wrong with ur laptop. cuz u can start without battery with ac adapter plugged in. and performance dont drop when charging

Reply 3 : MSI GX640 cannot start up without battery? (plug in ac adapter)

Sounds like you need a better power supply or you need to return the system.

You could get a targus 180W universal power supply pretty cheap on ebay, that should be more than enough. But that's only if your problem is due to the power supply.

Reply 4 : MSI GX640 cannot start up without battery? (plug in ac adapter)

i wonder really is power supply problem?

Reply 5 : MSI GX640 cannot start up without battery? (plug in ac adapter)

19v / 3.42A = 65w

i wonder this power can support?

Reply 6 : MSI GX640 cannot start up without battery? (plug in ac adapter)

65w is too low. Need 120W or higher I think.

If your current power supply is 65W, that is probably causing your problems.

Reply 7 : MSI GX640 cannot start up without battery? (plug in ac adapter)

19V/6.3A is the minimum for the MSI gamer series.

Reply 8 : MSI GX640 cannot start up without battery? (plug in ac adapter)

o thanks .....

so weird

Why MSI give me 19v / 3.42A ac adapter

Reply 9 : MSI GX640 cannot start up without battery? (plug in ac adapter)

I use my GX640 without battery without any problems.

You should reclaim "proper" 120W AC adapter.
